This Site is dedicated to all those families of the people that have tragically disappeared on flights in and around New Zealand. I  only hope that from all the effort in building this site and from all the effort of those taking part in this venture, that it will bear fruit in bringing ‘closure’ to their memories!

Welcome

On this site you will find information of aircraft that have disappeared in New Zealand and never been found.
Many theories abound of where they disappeared to, and yet, many years later they still have not been located.
As communication and technology increase there becomes a much greater chance of locating these aircraft if we can utilize and co-ordinate this into a combined effort rather than everyone running around like headless chickens.
I have spent thousands of hours (and dollars) researching into the disappearance of the DH90A Dragonfly ZK-AFB, Cessna 180 ZK-BMP, Cessna 180 ZK-FMQ, Cessna 172 ZK-CSS, Corsair NZ5517,  Hughes 500 ZK-HNW, and Tiger Moth ZK-AJV.
I have written a book on my research and findings which can be downloaded free on this site now as an eBook as the hard copies have sold out... originally published 2009.
Many brains are better than one, so if you have information on any missing aircraft in New Zealand, or you flew, or know of an aircraft that was flying on the days that any of these aircraft disappeared, no matter how insignificant it may seem, then please email  or write to me and let me know, and if you wish, I’ll add this information to the page of that particular aircraft for all to see. This information may not seem significant to yourself, but may be the missing ‘jigsaw piece’ to the puzzle that is needed by someone else. In all the research I have done, I have found this to happen time and time again!
If the aircraft is not shown, then please contact me  gavin@findlostaircraft.co.nz
and I will add another page for it.

These are the two most prominent books available on the subject of missing aircraft in New Zealand.

“LOST ...without trace?” by Richard Waugh, is a very extensively researched book  (from 25 years of research) written specifically about the disappearance of
DH Dragonfly ZK-AFB for the purpose of giving the reader every possible piece of information available, in the hope that someday, someone might just find it.

“MISSING” by Chris Rudge, is another extensively researched book that covers 17 Aircraft that disappeared and have never been found, 12 Aircraft that were lost and eventually found, and a further 16 Aircraft that were missing but some wreckage was found.

Both books are incredible in their own right and well worth having on your bookshelves.

SITE MAINTENANCE HISTORY (UPDATES).
These are the approximate locations of the areas where I believe these aircraft are, going on the information I have available to date.
As you may well know, Hughes 500 ZK-HNW was found in Nov.2012 within 3 miles of where I last positively placed it.
As per my update Feb 2022, I now believe ZK-AFB to be down east of Wanaka.
As of Feb 2023, as a result of researching for a Presentation in Christchurch, I now believe ZK-AFB to be on a hill on approach to Kaipo Airstrip in the Kaipo River Valley. There is much to suggest this as explained in my latest update in the ZK-AFB section of this website.
